July 22, 2004 -- What about you?

Are you primarily and advanced "Student of the Martial Arts" or, have you transcended your study of curriculum and techniques to become a "Master Teacher" as well as advanced student?

What's the difference?

Well, as an advanced student you may know martial arts curriculum through a very high level of Black Belt – maybe even 5th or 6th Degree Black Belt. You may also know precisely how each move should be executed – and may have personally mastered the execution of each movement.     You may be able to demonstrate each technique at a very high level of personal mastery.     You may also have mastered the history – evolution – and, rationale behind your art and behind the individual technical pieces of that curriculum.

If you've accomplished everything that I've discussed above you are an excellent advanced "Student of the Martial Arts." However, every thing I've mention so far does not qualify you as a "Master Teacher" – frankly, doesn't even qualify you as a "teacher."

What makes a "Master Teacher?"

Well – first of all the study of teaching requires learning about Psychology – especially as it applies to learning – or, Educational Psychology. Next, the study of teaching requires an understanding of student Motivation – to create a motivational environment both on a minute by minute – class by class basis – but, also for long-term motivation and enthusiasm. Next, the teacher must have an understanding of physiology and anatomy so as to be able to explain in correct terminology the processes and methods.     Additionally, a true "Master Teacher" will evaluate the process of their teaching and make sure that at each level that the goals, objectives, and methods are both age and rank appropriate.

Why this distinction?

Well, In many – if not most martial arts schools – the Head Teacher – is in reality an "Advanced Student" of the martial arts – but, certainly is not a "Master Teacher."
